John Elliott was a captain in the United States Marine Corps, and he was assigned to the U.S.S. Pennsylvania from 1943 to 1944. The battleship had been damaged at Pearl Harbor and then repaired. The Pennsylvania participated in the shore bombardment for the Aleution Island landings and many other island landings in the Pacific. The third Pennsylvania (BB-38) was laid down 27 October 1913 by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., Newport News, Va.; launched 16 March 1915; sponsored by Miss Elizabeth Kolb; and commissioned 12 June 1916, Capt.
